Pain Management Techniques

Various pain management techniques have been developed overtime, to effectively relieve pain associated with various disorders. Depending upon the cause of pain, these techniques eliminate it, causing as less harm to the body and health, as possible. Read on to learn more about pain management techniques.
Pain Management Techniques
Gone are the days when taking pain killers was the only way to address acute and unbearable pain. Modern pain management techniques have been developed to fight pain caused due to illnesses and injuries. These are effective, safe and involve no risk, that is generally involved with the use of pain relief drugs. Sometimes, pain management techniques also require the use of pain killers to aid the process of pain management. However, the use of these medications is restricted, so that, the least possible harm is caused to the patient's health.

Pain management techniques include noninvasive pharmacological medicines, massage, surgery, exercise, anesthesia, natural techniques, psychological techniques, etc. these techniques can be used to address joint pain, lower back pain, muscle pain, chronic pain, neck pain and various other pains.

Pain Management Medications
The pain management medications used in pain management procedures are known as noninvasive pharmacological medicines. These include antidepressants, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and aspirin, narcotic medications, analgesics and muscle relaxants. These pain management medications are administered under the guidance and supervision of a medical practitioner, since their consumption involves some amount of risk.

Pain Management Procedures

Exercise
This pain management technique is used to manage pain caused due to arthritis, rheumatism, back related disorders, etc. These exercises allow smooth muscle function and should be done under the supervision of an expert to avoid complications. Exercising can also speed up the recovery process. These include aerobic workouts, aqua exercises, physiotherapy, etc.

Invasive Pain Management Procedures
These include procedures like prolotherapy, radio frequency radioblation, implantable opioid infusion pumps, injections and implanted electro therapy devices. As the names of the procedures suggest, they surgically implant pain relieving devices into the body, that act and function within the body.

Massage
Massage therapy is an effective pain management technique used to relieve sore muscles, pain induced stress, inflammation and swelling, muscle tension and fatigue. It also improves blood circulation and boosts immunity.

Hydrotherapy
This technique uses warm water to relieve muscle stiffness and stress. Running water stimulates the muscles, thereby reducing muscle tension and relieving pain.

Psychological Techniques
These include behavioral modification, cognitive therapy, hypnotherapy and biofeedback. All these procedures are used to stimulate the patient's response to pain. Once the patient learns to implement these techniques, he/she can practice them on their own, whenever pain is experienced. These techniques are very effective in relieving pain caused due to emotional factors.

Cutaneous Stimulation
These include administering external pain relievers like cold packs and hot packs, that facilitate superficial cooling or heating of skin to alleviate pain.

Anesthesia
This is currently the most popular technique for pain management, used widely during surgical procedures and childbirth. Anesthesia during childbirth involves injecting a epidural steroid into the spine which reduces inflammation and relieves pain for a short time. This is a temporary measure as the effect of the epidural steroid fades away in a few hours.

Natural Pain Management Techniques
The natural pain management techniques can be used to address pain caused due to migraines, stress, menopause and muscle pain. These techniques would include magnetic therapy, chiropractic, aromatherapy, acupressure, homeopathy, ayurveda, yoga, meditation, tai chi, acupuncture, etc. Some herbal and home remedies can also relieve pain effectively.

Rest and Sleep
These are the two most important factors of pain management. Adequate rest and sleep is essential for the speeding up of pain management processes. Lack of sleep and rest can also be a cause of pain and can also increase pain. Therefore, sleep and rest are very necessary for effective pain relief.

The pain management techniques mentioned above work well when implemented in conjunction with one another. This will also help speed up the pain management procedures. These pain management techniques are essential in addressing pain in order to maintain the quality of life.
